History

I have been involved in Martial Arts since 1969. My early years were spent doing Judo both as a child under the tutelage of former British Team Coach Roy Inman alongside the likes of Neil Adams, and then into adulthood including running a Judo club in the Army. In 1974, I started training in Bujutsu with the Anglo Japanese Bujutsu Association. 1980, I attended a British Judo Association club coach and officials course at the Army school of physical training, Aldershot.
During my time with the military I was fortunate to learn and also teach “Arrest and Restraint” and what the Army called aikido although it had no resemblance to what I know as Aikido as it was done with rifles and batons.
After leaving the Army in 1985 I became re-involved with “The Anglo Japanese Bujutsu Association” formerly known as “The Anglo Japanese Judo Association”
I currently run Two clubs. Monday Nights I run a jujutsu club, Wednesday nights I run my main club which is the Hayes Bujutsu Club; the style of Bujutsu I teach is “Anglo Japanese Bujutsu”. I have been the General Secretary of the Anglo Japanese Bujutsu Association since 2000 which entails being responsible for the day to day running of the association. Since the unexpected death of my Sensei Mr Tom Kavanagh 7th Dan, I am now the only active Director of the Association along side three of the other Sensei’s. My goal for the association is to continue its existence maintaining the quality of the technique as taught to me, adding to the syllabus and as such I have introduced many techniques acquired during my earlier years where I taught in the army. Also I have included many techniques From Ryu Kyu Kobujutsu which is an art that I am Still Learning. To this end I was responsible for re-writing the grading syllabus. My mind is open to learning more techniques and I enjoy nothing more than having the opportunity to pass these techniques on to a wider audience. I welcome the opportunity to learn, teach, travel, and participate in upcoming events. I would say that my strengths within the field of martial arts are ground work/grappling, Kansetsuwaza, Shimiwaza and Points of Pain.
As you can see from the list of dates below I have become a popular teacher at many Budo Seminars both at home and abroad which will indicate my willingness to travel and be able teach across a broad spectrum of events. Also some of the dates listed below show “attended”, these are the seminars where I was taking the opportunity to learn from those much better than myself which will in its self show my willingness to learn.
